Buying Guide – How to Choose the Best Floating Lanterns to Release in the Sky

Choosing the right lanterns requires understanding material safety, environmental impact, and the specific type of release you intend to perform.

Material Safety

Safety is paramount when using any lantern meant for release. Look for products made from flame retardant paper or biodegradable materials that reduce risk to surroundings and people. Always check the product description for flame safety certifications before purchase.

Prioritize products with flame retardant treatments to ensure safe use during your event.

Environmental Impact

Biodegradable materials are essential for responsible releases. Choose lanterns that decompose naturally after use to avoid leaving litter in the environment. Bamboo and paper are common eco-friendly materials used in quality lanterns.

Select biodegradable options to protect the environment after your celebration.

Release Type

Decide if you want the lanterns to go into the sky or float on water. Sky lanterns use combustion to rise while water lanterns use candlelight for floating. Ensure you have the necessary space and water access accordingly.

Verify whether the lantern is designed for sky flight or water floating before buying.

Assembly Difficulty

Some lanterns require quick assembly while others come pre-assembled. Check the time required to set up each unit especially for large groups. Easy folding constructions save valuable time during ceremonies.

Opt for simple assembly if you need to set up many units quickly.

Light Source

Traditional lanterns use tea lights while others may use LED candles. LED options are safer and reusable but lack the combustion aspect of traditional sky lanterns. Ensure the light source meets your event safety requirements.

Choose LED lights for safety or real flames for traditional effects.

Pack Size

Consider the number of guests or the scale of the event when choosing a pack. Larger packs of twenty units work well for groups while smaller packs suit intimate gatherings. Buying in bulk can reduce per unit costs.

Select a pack size that matches the number of participants in your event.

Waterproof Features

For water releases ensure the lanterns have waterproof bases and adhesive pads for candles. This prevents the light source from getting wet and extinguishing early. Waterproofing is crucial for stable floating on water.

Check for waterproof bases to ensure stability on water surfaces.

Customization Options

Many products allow writing messages on the surface before release. Look for lanterns with smooth surfaces suitable for markers. Custom messages add a personal touch to memorial or celebration events.

Pick lanterns with writable surfaces to personalize your tributes.
